When we were young - special treats

I recently borrowed a book from the local library titled "When we were young: a compendium of childhood" compiled and illustrated by John Burningham, a celebrated author and illustrator of children's books.

After reading the first contribution by Andrew O'Hagan, a novelist and essayist, childhood memories began floating through my mind.

So I thought, why not write down my memories... in my blog. The first topic - Special Treats.

Special treats when I was young ...

- spending three pence on a pack of Fruit Tingles at interval time at the "pictures" and sucking them slowly all through the main feature movie. Fruit Tingles

- a Twin Pat ice block bought for 3d (?) at the corner store and sharing half with my younger sibling. They're not around anymore! Unique in that each ice block had 2 sticks and you broke it in half to eat or in my case to share.

- store bought brick of ice cream to have with the homemade apple pie / plum tart on an outing to the beach. This was special as we only ever had mum's homemade ice cream made from condensed milk at home! 

Obviously I liked my sweet things!

Starting out

My Mum taught me embroidery from an early age. I am very thankful that she did so as I have enjoyed many years of stitching.

The early days!

This masterpiece is a very early one. The edge was sewn with my first sewing machine. It was a wonderful red one that I turned the wheel by hand. 

In the bottom right hand corner are the remaining stitches of 2 birds and some flowers. Done in running stitch. 

I embroidered the 3 piece duchess set around 9 years of age. Mum drew the basket of flowers in pencil on the pieces of pale pink lawn and I stitched over the lines. Stem stitch and lazy daisy are the 2 stitches used. The edge was hemmed by hand. 

Tea set

Another treasure from my childhood - this delightful china tea set with shelves. 

Many a tea party was enjoyed with my dolly. 

I delight in it every day as it is proudly on display in the dining room. 

Clock money box

While doing a clean up, going through the garage cupboards, I found my clock!! This is a money box given me when I was around 6 years old. It survived the 1974 flood. One of very few childhood possessions I still have.

Put a penny in the chimney slot and push the lever on top of the roof. Hey presto, the cuckoo pops out. Don't you just love it! Now pride of place in my treasures.
